For the 3rd edition, the VIBUU went all in with a special lineup of urban artists and took a much larger leap by engaging an EDM DJ. It is ambitious and has created a new shift and movement in the rise of urban music in Uganda.
The 12 of August 2022 was crowned by the vibuu event – a phenomenal social event that features young urban artists of all genres and backgrounds. The event was organized by Urban Flow, a team of creatives who set out to provide a platform for artists to earn from their work through the streaming service, a home for Uganda’s best music, to provide a boost for artists to legitimize their brands and to learn how best they can best protect their valuable intellectual property with Uganda Registration Services Bureau. The vibuu has set out to give more new artists a stage to give massive performances to new audiences in Uganda! The Ugandan audience has been known to be tricky and selective when it comes to Ugandan artists or rather, yet there has been a preference for foreign music and little support has been given to these young artists, but that has not stopped them from creating and sharing music. Plus with the rise of digital streaming platforms, a world that is more inclusive and appreciative of creative acts, the dynamics of the music industry in Uganda are changing, and the young artists are managing this change.
The visionaries behind the vibuu event not only want to share good music with various audiences but also want to create an urban universe with various creatives. The vibuu has become a home to many as it seeks to create unity and a community of solidarity among creatives. A community that pushes to engage each other’s music and other forms of creative arts, a community that shows up for each creative, a community whose backbones are friendship, unity, and sharing.
The 3rd edition of the vibuuu event proved to be a success with a full house, more partners on board like Charge Ko, Frank Wesley Africa, and Panamera bar and restaurant plus a great lineup of artists like Akeine, Lukas Blacc, Papa T, 1der Jr, tina Ford, Cdave, Elle B, Joka, Zaab, and Tera Nitric.
“It was so good sometimes I forgot I was the organizer and went dancing with the artists”
Leone George Okello – one of the vibuu event organizers
The ambiance at the event proved to be electric and groovy with Tera Nitric – an urban EDM artist that owned the DJ deck and mixed various music of the urban artists at the event.
“It was amazing seeing people enjoy the music that you made”
Tera Nitric
He continues to say ”The event was an all-round event that drew you to the audience and other artists, and it stood out as that one event that isn’t standing by certain narratives or confines of the music industry at large”
One of the organizers highlighted that they were more intentional in involving all genres, thus taking a risk with an EDM DJ which isn’t typical in Uganda.
“Tera Nitric made the night for a lot of people! I am glad we took the risk with EDM. He was amazing and all of you should watch out for him”
Leone George Okello – one of the vibuu event organizers
The vibuu also came through to include young artists that have not entirely had an experience performing for a live audience.
“It was my first performance as an artist and so for that, I want to thank Urban flow UG and all the sponsors that made the event possible. First things first, I was scared as hell cause of the stage fright, but I picked up. The reception of the urban music was so encouraging. Never had I ever seen so many people vibe to the things we make without being forced, but with outstanding energy.”
Joka (one of the artists that performed at the vibuu event.)
In line with the firsts, the 3rd edition of the vibuu event for the very first time had dancers perform together with the artists. A lot of the performances were interactive and got a lot of people glued to the stage waiting for what was to come next. The vibuu event proved to be a space that doesn’t leave out any creatives, But also understands the need to appreciate creatives’ work.
“My envelope was handed out to me immediately after the show. I didn’t have to chase around people and remind them to honor the agreement,”
The vibuu // urban flow is now an ecosystem of creatives being their own biggest hype men. It provided ground for other artists who weren’t entirely performing to see other upcoming talents, collaborate, and build on the solid creative community.
“The vibuu is very much an artists shows as it is a fun show”
Leone George Okello – one of the vibuu event organizers
I guess we stay tuned and on the lookout for the next vibuu edition.
